Barbara Golden

Associate Professor of Biochemistry

The research in Dr. Golden's lab focuses on the RNA molecule and how/why it behaves like a protein. Knowing this information will enable us to further recognize the role(s) that RNA plays within the cell. Most importantly, the role it plays in gene regulation. When we do not understand why a particular gene expression occurs we know to look at the RNA for answers.

RNA molecule

Currently Dr. Golden's lab is conducting research on the hepatitis delta virus ribozyme. They know that this molecule "cuts" (much like a clever) and they are studying the 3-D structure. Knowing the function of this molecule provides a way to "target" the ribozyme and thus turn it off and on thereby potentially interfering with the gene expression.
