The 2023 Annual Meeting of the Greater Indiana Society for Neuroscience (GISfN) was held at Purdue Memorial Union on Sept. 8. The event brought together leading neuroscientists, researchers, and trainees from Purdue University as well as Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana University School of Medicine and School of Science, and the University of Notre Dame. The key goal was to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing and strengthen neuroscience research across the state of Indiana.
The meeting featured lectures from invited speakers from across Indiana universities and 100 poster presentations. Opening remarks were given by Karen Plaut, Purdue Executive Vice President for Research; Peristera Paschou, Professor in the Purdue College of Science’s Department of Biological Sciences and Chair of the Society; and Chris Rochet, Director of Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience.
In her opening remarks, Karen Plaut emphasized the exciting future of life sciences in Indiana, highlighting recent investments made by Purdue University, including Purdue in Indianapolis, the Daniels School of Business, and Purdue Computes with its new institute for Physical AI. Plaut stressed the importance of collaboration across Indiana universities and partnerships within the larger ecosystem, including pharmaceutical companies, to drive innovation and address pressing issues in life sciences and neurosciences.
Peristera Paschou, Chair of GISfN, shared the conference's theme: Connecting Researchers, Accelerating Discoveries, Advancing Education and Training.
“We are delighted to be welcoming to Purdue neuroscientists from across Indiana” Paschou said. “This event exemplifies the commitment of Indiana's neuroscience community to collaboration, innovation, and excellence in research and education. It provides a unique opportunity to explore collaborative efforts and capitalize on complementary strengths and resources”.
Chris Rochet, Director of Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience, spoke about the meeting's alignment with the Institute's strategic priorities.
"The GISfN annual meeting is an important date on our calendar because the goals of this meeting align very well with the Institute's strategic priorities," Rochet said.
These goals include unraveling mysteries of the healthy brain, advancing understanding of central nervous system disorders, and fostering interdisciplinary research and neuroscience education, all of which were evident throughout the program. Rochet went on to highlight the meeting's role in promoting collaboration both on and off the Purdue campus, emphasizing the wealth of outstanding neuroscience programs within a 2-hour radius of Purdue.
The 2023 Annual Meeting of GISFN provided a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing, demonstrating Indiana's commitment to advancing neuroscience research and education. The event was supported by Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience, Purdue’s College of Science, Stark Neuroscience Research Institute, IU Bloomington, IU School of Medicine and School of Science, University of Notre Dame and Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.
