Social Security Scanner
These tools are designed to aid you in finding Social Security Numbers on your machine. Make sure to close all applications before running this tool. Things to be aware of:
- DO NOT DELETE ANY FILE unless you are positive it contains SSN’s at a glance or you have opened the file and verified it contains SSN’s.
- All password protected files should have the password removed or they will not be scanned.
- Please note that while this script is capable of detecting Social Security Numbers in most files, it is not fool proof. Some document types, such as Adobe PDF and Outlook PST, are not searchable in the manner used by this script. The author of this script cannot be held accountable in any way for missed files or other potential problems associated with using this script.
- Zip files over 200 MB will result in longer wait times and may cause the machine to appear locked up.
- This process will take several hours, and may possibly takes days for slower computers or computers with a very large number of files.
- While you can continue to work normally, we highly recommend you allow the scan to run uninterrupted.
- Results will be copied to a Bio-IT server for further reference.
- If potential Social Security Numbers are found, the scan does not store them; only the paths of the files are stored.
- There will be many so-called “False Positives” in the results file. If you are unsure if a file is a false positive, please contact Bio-IT and we will assist you in making that determination.
